FAQ - When should I apply lawn fertilizer?

For the perfect residential or commercial lawn, a fertilization schedule is just as important as the type of fertilizer you use. Fertilizing your lawn at the beginning of its natural growth cycle will result in a lush and weed-free lawn. Since grass gets two major growth periods here in Northern Virginia - in the spring and in the fall – the most important time to fertilize your lawn is the March-April, May-June and Sept.-October time frames.

Fertilize according to your grass type

Depending on the type of turf you have, your lawn may even require additional applications. If you have cool-climate grass, then the best time to apply the first application of fertilizer is when the soil temperature reaches 50 degrees, and then again 6-8 weeks later. It’s important to remember that applying the proper amount of water to your lawn will significantly influence the growth of your root system. If the fertilizer just stays on the surface of your lawn, your grass will experience a chemical burn, resulting in damaged and feeble grass. However, if your grass is doing well, you may want to apply another application of fertilizer in early summer – a few months following the initial treatment.

Keep your grass green all-year round with proper fertilizing techniques

If you apply the right fertilizer at the right time and execute proper watering practices, your new grass should be thick, fresh and strong enough to endure the coming seasons.
